There are already volumes of information available on Archbishop Denis Eugene Hurley OMI, but nowadays an easier way of getting information to a wider audience or readership is the use of the electronic media, in particular a website. For this reason the launch of this website is a step in the right direction, to bring this important Catholic figure of 20th Century South Africa to the attention of the wider public. Archbishop Denis Hurley was noted for his passionate commitment to leading a vibrant Catholic Church in a society inspired by a vision rooted in the Holy Scriptures, in particular St Paul who had tremendous impact on the society of his time.
For Archbishop Denis Hurley the way the Church could impact on contemporary society was significantly articulated by Fr Teilhard de Chardin SJ, whom the Archbishop greatly admired, in his idea of recapitulation of all creation in Christ. Perhaps he drew his inspiration from the words of St Paul: "that the creation will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God".
Cardinal Napier OFM, Archbishop of Durban
We are delighted about the establishment of a website dedicated to Archbishop Hurley who was an Oblate of Mary Immaculate. For me he was a prophet who stood tall in the dark and difficult days. He is a powerful ancestor of our new nation because he carried the light when so few could or would. His greatness w
as to be one of the prophets at the darkest hour before the dawn. In my opinion it is a tragedy that the South African Government has not sufficiently recognised and honoured this role. Yet we are fools for Christ who do not seek reward in this world and so his treasure will be found in heaven. And we, who are so much more limited than he was, look forward to his intercession for us as we too labour in this vineyard where he gave his whole life.
V. Rev. Fr. Stuart C Bate OMI, Provincial of Natal
Considering the effect that Archbishop Denis Eugene Hurley OMI had on the Church and on society, it is a great privilege for us that the Hurley Website is being set up under the auspices of St. Josep
h's Theological Institute. Our congratulations go to the organisers of this project and it is hoped that those who browse this site will be both edified, and motivated to become beacons of light themselves. It is a particular joy for us to have our library named in his honour. He himself opened the library in 1995 and unveiled a splendid bust of himself a short while later.
Sylvester David OMI, President of St Joseph's Theological Institute
